But the Yankees answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Yoshida came to the plate for the second time in the top of the third with runners on first and second. He hit a cutter from Schmidt on a 1B1S pitch, but was retired on a fly ball to right field. With two outs in the top of the sixth, he grounded out to the first baseman.
Trailing 1-2, Boston tied the game in the top of the eighth. Hernandez led off with a single. He advanced to second on a throwing error by second baseman Torres. Maguire walked and then Reyes laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on first and second. Duran grounded out to the second baseman, allowing Hernandez to come home from third.
Yoshida led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to center field. He was thrown out at second base on a grounder to short. Devers followed with an infield single, but Turner got the final out. The Yankees were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings.
Boston got on the board in the top of the 10th when Casas walked to put runners on first and third, then Hernandez singled. The Yankees had runners on first and third in the bottom of the 10th when McKinney singled, but Trevino and Volpi both struck out. The game ended with a 3-2 victory for Boston.
Yoshida went 0-for-11 with two walks and two strikeouts in the first three games of the series against the Yankees. He fell to .300 with a .842 OPS this season.
