Golf isn’t usually the first sport you encounter. Most golf beginners experience various sports before learning golf. If so, you can improve your skills by using the skills you have learned through other sports in golf.
World-renowned golf instructor Brian Mogg (USA) introduced his know-how to an American golf media outlet. Mog is a veteran teacher who taught Pak Se-ri, Yang Yong-eun, Kim Mi-hyeon, Yang Hee-young, Lee Mi-na, and Lee Kyung-hoon. It operates Brian Mogg Golf Academy in five locations around the world. In Korea, there is one in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do.
Most people think there is no connection between golf and other sports. Some even consider the golf swing an entirely new motion. Mogg, however, has a different view. If you use the skills you have learned in other sports correctly, you can improve your golf skills sooner.
baseball
A baseball slugger lifts his front foot and lowers his foot again just before impact. It’s called a leg kick. This movement is the same principle as the downswing in golf.
The practice is simple. Right before impact, lift the front foot, then put the foot down and rotate it to swing. Using this method, you can feel the head speed faster than usual. At first, exaggerate the motion to get used to this feeling. It helps you learn how to put your weight on your front foot.
Once you get the feeling of putting your weight on it, apply it to your normal golf swing. The foot is not lifted directly, but the principle of utilizing the center of gravity is the same. If you can feel your weight moving down and forward, you’re done. This drill helps you create a more dynamic and powerful swing, just like baseball’s hard hitters.
football
Although not universal in Korea, American football is also a sport that helps improve golf skills. In general, it is easy to understand if you think of throwing a ball.
The way the quarterback (who throws the ball) lifts the ball to throw is almost identical to a good golf backswing. The ready position to throw the ball is with the elbow facing the ground and the right hand holding the ball under the ball, some distance away from the body. “The right elbow pointing down is the right arm folded correctly and in the perfect position to support the club at the top,” Mog explained. 토토
A natural gap between the torso and the right elbow allows for a power-rich arc and a full backswing if it feels ‘wide’. The theory is that trying to create as much space as possible between the right elbow and the side leads to a good backswing.
